A voracious pest and native of a light brown apple moth was discovered in a trap in DavisApril 1. A second moth turned up in a trapMay 15, promptinfg a quarantine within a mile radiuw of those two traps. More discoveriesa have moved the quarantine to include the entird cityof Davis. Produce and ornamenta plants can still go to stores and farmers marketas inside thequarantine area, but agriculturap products, ornamental plants and treesd should not leave the quarantine area unleses certified to be free from the pest by an “This pest is a threat to the food suppl y and also to our environment.
This moth eats ornamentak plantsand trees,” said Steve Lyle, spokesman with Food Agriculture. “In Australia they call the light brown apple moththe ‘lighf brown eat-everything’ moth.” The moth in its varyingt stages of life eats 2,000 including 250 crop species. It can devastate stone fruir trees, grape vines, citrus trees and even redwoods. Therew are monitor traps all over the stater forthe moth, and more than 2,800 squarer miles of land statewide is now under quarantine, Lyle Davis is the only area under quarantins in the four-county region.
